The strange world of machine hire!

If you’re in the hire industry then I’m sure you’ve had some strange requests, but what was your weirdest?

Last week we asked our friends on LinkedIn to tell us their bizarre stories, with our favourite winning one of our famous brownies…

Thank you to everyone who contributed, we hope you enjoy them as much as we did!

“Request to put a full male voice choir on top of 8 big deck scissors rising up to 10m in unison during the Edinburgh Military Tattoo back in the 90s. Also didn’t want any handrails fitted as this would “spoil” the effect. Never went ahead – I had a few safety concerns 😂”

– Stevie Watt, Service Manager at Haulotte UK Ltd

Customer: “I want to hire one of those blue ones”
Me: “Great, any idea what size or model, can you tell me roughly what height you need to get to?”
Customer: “I don’t know but it’s a blue one with tractor tyres on”

– Adam Smith, Head of Regional Sales South at Finning UK & Ireland

“We had a customer that wanted a “green portaloo” the other day! Didn’t want the red one that was delivered 🤯”

– Rolfe Jackson, Director at ViC Group UK Ltd

“Many years ago when working out of an office near Chelsea , I took an enquiry for an “access platform” to lift their baby grand piano to the first floor of their town house!!

When it was suggested they may want hire a City Crane instead of a platform – the client got all stroppy and said “what do you know?” “Obviously more than you!” was my reply as the phone line went dead.”

– Mark Smith, Owner of Mark Smith Training

A man with a strong Irish accent called us:
Mate your machine is off hire… “
Us : “ok here’s the off hire number”
“NO! You don’t understand .. call the fire brigade”!

– Tim Ward, Upward Powered Access

Congratulations to Rolfe Jackson from ViC Group UK Ltd in Lincoln.

We’ll run this competition again soon, to enter just comment on our LinkedIn or send us an email!
